Texas TEPA

The Energy Professionals Association was founded in Texas by a small group of ABCs and REPs shortly after deregulation was voted in by the state legislature in 1999. TEPA members in Texas work within the framework of The Electric Reliability Council of Texas.  ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to 23 million Texas customers – representing 85 percent of the state’s electric load.

Because Texas’s electricity consumption is near $24 billion a year, which is the highest in the U.S., it is a fiercely competitive market.  To that end, TEPA has been instrumental in providing market knowledge to help Texas consumers make the best energy procurement choices and to uphold the integrity of deregulated retail.

Northeast TEPA

In August 2013, a roundtable was organized in New York City to discuss the creation of the first TEPA chapter outside Texas. The roundtable, which was held on August 14th and hosted at the offices of Good Energy, included approximately 30 energy professionals from New York, New Jersey and Maryland. The initial meeting was met with positive feedback and support.

In October, the TEPA Board returned to New York City to discuss the organization of a TEPA Northeast Chapter Board. By December 2013 the TEPA NE Chapter was officially organized and announced during the annual conference in Dallas.

The original TEPA NE Board members included: Javier Barrios, TEPA president and Managing Partner at Good Energy; Jon Hartnett, TEPA vice president and Enterprise Manager at EnerNOC; Jeff Lenetsky, TEPA treasurer and Sales Director at World Energy; Gordon Boyd, TEPA legislative/regulatory chair and President of EnergyNext; Craig Wall, TEPA standards & compliance chair and Manager of Channel Sales at Patriot Energy; and Bill Cannon, TEPA board secretary and VP of Northeast Markets with Choice Energy.

The TEPA Northeast Chapter currently operates within the PJM Interconnection, New York ISO and New England ISO which includes all or parts of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

“An association like TEPA was needed in our market,” said Barrios. “Electricity aggregators, brokers and consultants (ABC) across the Northeast are not well represented in this region. I believe a TEPA presence here is important to help bridge the divide between ABCs, providers and consumers across PJM, NY ISO and NE ISO regions. I am confident TEPA can become the voice of the ABC community in the Northeast and address the key issues affecting the region.”

The TEPA Northeast Chapter held its first Open House at the EnerNOC offices in Boston to give energy brokers, consultants and suppliers across New England a chance to learn more about the organization and meet the new TEPA Northeast Chapter Board.
