The physical separator between the building’s exterior and its interior is the envelope. The envelope is as it sounds–what the building is wrapped in–its outer exterior. The design and construction of the structure includes the walls, roof, windows, doors
and sub floor.
One thing to consider is the climate a building is located in. Is it dry, seasonal or cold all year. Whatever the seasonality and climate is will help determine how best to control the internal environment of a building and what materials to use to build and insulate the structure.
Building owners can better manage the interior temperature which means more optimal use of and extended life of equipment. People often discount the importance of upgraded windows, doors, insulation and even simple measures like weather strips and caulk to seal the structure.
